1952-53 Victoria #149 of Adolfo Luque. Graded "Authentic" by SGC because of the large chunk missing from the upper right corner. Luque is one of the two patriarchs of Cuban baseball, along with Miguel Angel González. He had an outstanding pitching career that included World Series rings with the 1919 Reds and the 1933 Giants. His 1923 season with the Cincinnati Reds stands as one of the greatest pitching performances of the era, with 27 wins and a 1.93 ERA. After his playing days, he had an extensive managerial career in both Cuba and Mexico.
Issued in Cuba during the 1952-53 Winter League season, the Victoria
set contains 168 cards measuring approximately 2" x 3" with some size
variance. The cards feature colorized player photographs on thin paper
stock and were intended to be mounted into an album, which is why many
surviving examples show glue or album wear. Backs are printed in Spanish
and include player biographies, statistics, and card numbers. The set
includes Cuban stars, Negro Leaguers, and Major League players, and is
especially admired for its colorful design and scarcity.
