1926-27 Aguilitas card of "El Caballero," Alejandro Oms. Graded 1.5 by GAI due to several spots of paper loss (see scan).

During the 1920's Oms was the centerfielder for the Cuban Stars of the Eastern Colored League. In the 30's he played for the New York Cubans. Oms is credited with a .332 lifetime batting average in a Negro League career that lasted from 1921 to 1935.

In his native Cuba, where Oms is a HOFer, he hit over .300 11 times including 8 years in a row (both are records.) In 1928 he had the longest hitting streak in Cuban League history at 30 games. A four time batting champion, his .345 lifetime average ranks 3rd all-time in Cuba.

Oms, along with Julio Rojo and Pablo Mesa, were the only Santa Clara natives to play for the legendary 1923-24 Santa Clara team, the greatest in Cuban League history. Oms, Mesa, and Oscar Charleston made up one of the greatest outfields ever to play the game, regardless of skin color.

It's interesting to note that on his Aguilitas card, Oms is pictured in San Jose uniform, a team whose entire history spanned less than 2 months during the 1925-26 campaign, their only year in the league. After starting off 3-16, the team disbanded and officially forfeited the next 25 games to wind up with the worst official record in the history of the league with 3 wins and 41 losses. Few images of San Jose team members exist.
