1952-53 Victoria #46 of Pedro Formental, in a CGC 1, from the Richard Merkin Collection. Formental was a veteran of Cuban, Mexican, and American Negro Leagues. Formental’s primary accomplishments are in the Cuban League, where he holds several career records, including home runs (54), runs scored (431), and runs batted in (362), as well as the single-season record for RBIs (57).
Issued in Cuba during the 1952-53 Winter League season, the Victoria
set contains 168 cards measuring approximately 2" x 3" with some size
variance. The cards feature colorized player photographs on thin paper
stock and were intended to be mounted into an album, which is why many
surviving examples show glue or album wear. Backs are printed in Spanish
and include player biographies, statistics, and card numbers. The set
includes Cuban stars, Negro Leaguers, and Major League players, and is
especially admired for its colorful design and scarcity.
