1931 Doble Aguila #157 of Negro Leaguer and HOF Martín Dihigo, SGC 1. This card is a pop 6 in all grades at SGC.
This is one of only three cards in the entire hobby to feature a Negro Leaguer in his playing days wearing a full Negro League uniform. Dihigo is seen here wearing a Hilldale Daisies uniform, the Negro League team he had last played for in the United States. "Hilldale" is easily visible on his chest. The story goes that when Concordia's team ownership reached out to Dihigo to offer him a contract and have him come down to Venezuela, they told him he needed to bring his own uniform since he was so much bigger than the rest of the players and they didn't have a uniform that would fit him.
Cuban-born Dihigo is the greatest all-around Negro League player in the minds of many baseball scholars. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977, the second Hispanic-born ballplayer to be inducted after Roberto Clemente. In Mexico, where he was known as "El Inmortal," he once won the batting title and pitching title (ERA) in the same season, something neither Babe Ruth nor Shohei Ohtani ever did. He was inducted into the Mexican baseball Hall of Fame in 1964. He is also in the Hall of Fame in his native Cuba, where he was known as "El Maestro." He also managed teams in Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. One of the greatest baseball minds of all time.
Doble Aguila is a Venezuelan issue primarily distributed in 1931 and 1932, and is one of the only Latin American sets issued in the 1930’s. While incredibly scarce, there were also some cards issued in 1934 and 1935. In the 1931 and 1932 sets, cards #1-200 are from 1931, and cards #201 and above are from 1932. There are several runs of boxing cards within both years. Unlike many Latin American issues that are on thin stock or on photographic paper, these cards are on a thick stock similar to that used for Topps vintage 1950’s cards. They measure just over 2 ¾” x 1 ¾”.
