1923-24 Billiken of long-time Negro Leaguer Jose Maria Fernandez. Graded a 3 (VG) by PSA.
One of the best defensive catchers in the Negro Leagues, where he spent 35 years as a player and manager, Fernandez hit a career high .373 for the Chicago American Giants in 1930. He began with the Cuban Stars in 1916 and played for several teams including the New York Cuban sof the 1930's. He managed the Cubans to a Championship over the Cleveland Buckeyes in 1947.
In his homeland of Cuba where he is a member of the HOF, his career spanned over 45 years as a player, coach or manager. His 24 year playing career, from 1915-16 to 1942-43, is a Cuban League record. He hit over .300 nine times.
Fernandez was in the league as a player, manager or coach through the final year of the Cuban Professional League, 1960-61.
