1948-49 Toleteros card of
Piper Davis. A perennial all-star in the Negro Leagues, he had a .385 lifetime batting average in the East-West game. Was a player and/or manager fro the Birmingham Black Barons for most of the 1940's. One of his most famous students was a teenager he managed in 1948 by the name of Willie Mays.
Davis was the first black player signed by the Red Sox, in 1950. He also played in Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico in addition to 11 years as a Major League scout.
A great all-around athlete, he played basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters for 2 years in the 1940's. An important Negro League figure.
Card is graded an SGC 40 (VG). This is toughest known card of Piper Davis.
