1948-49 Toleteros Johnny Britton SGC 2.5, pop 7 card in all grades.
Britton was a third baseman in the Negro leagues and in the Japanese Pacific League. During the 1944 Negro World Series, Britton was injured in a car accident, along with Tommy Sampson, Pepper Bassett, and Leandy Young. Britton suffered a dislocated left hand in the accident. Britton and Jimmy Newberry were the first African-Americans to play post-war Japanese professional baseball.
The debut Toleteros issue in 1948-49 features 176 cards measuring 1 ?” x 2 ¼”. The cards were part of a game concept that also involved an album into which cards were often pasted. The cards in this set are borderless, black and white, sepia-toned portraits on matte cardboard stock that is relatively thick. Backs are printed in black with the name TOLETEROS, and different baseball plays numbered 1-84 and corresponded to the game.
