1949-50 Toleteros card of
Canena Marquez. A member of the Puerto Rican baseball HOF, Marquez was a star Negro Leaguer in the 1940's playing for the Homestead Grays and New York Cubans. He led the league with a .417 average in 1947 while also leading in stolen bases. He ended his Negro League career with a .371 lifetime average.
In Puerto Rico he set single-season records for slugging pct., doubles, triples, and hits. In 1948-49 he became the only player in league history to collect 100 hits (108) in a season (seasons were 60 games). He beat out Hank Aaron for the batting title in 1953-54. Marquez died tragically when he was shot and killed by his son-in-law during an argument.
Card has great eye appeal but paper loss to the reverse.
