1950-51 Toleteros card of
Ruben Gomez. This card was issued one year prior to his MVP season of 1951-52. A HOFer and legend in Puerto Rico, Gomez played for an astonishing 28 years in the Puerto Rican league, all for Santurce. He is the winningest pitcher in the island's history with 174 career wins (most seasons were only 60 games). He pitched for 9 championship teams in Puerto Rico. Known for his wicked screwball, he began in 1947-48 and pitched in the league until he was 49 years old.
Gomez also played for 7 years in the Majors with the Giants and on October 1st, 1954, in front of 71,555 spectators, became the first Puerto Rican pitcher to start and win a World Series game .
