1932 Doble Aguila #306 Tetelo Vargas. Card presents well with strong centering and moderate corner and edge wear.

Nicknamed "El Gamo Dominicano" (the Dominican Deer), he starred in the U.S. Negro Leagues, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Venezuela, and is widely considered one of the greatest Latino baseball players of his era.

Vargas holds the record for the highest single-season batting average in major league history according to Baseball Reference. During the 1943 season with the New York Cubans of the Negro National League, Vargas batted a staggering .471.

Doble Aguila is a Venezuelan issue primarily distributed in 1931 and 1932, and is one of the only Latin American sets issued in the 1930’s. While incredibly scarce, there were also some cards issued in 1934 and 1935. In the 1931 and 1932 sets, cards #1-200 are from 1931, and cards #201 and above are from 1932. There are several runs of boxing cards within both years. Unlike many Latin American issues that are on thin stock or on photographic paper, these cards are on a thick stock similar to that used for Topps vintage 1950’s cards. They measure just over 2 ¾” x 1 ¾”.
